I agree, this is pretty fun, and you wrote a great introductory paragraph, helps me enjoy playing it more, imagining I have a limitless supply of grenades, and targets to use them on.
I got to 1050, and then the meteors would come down at the exact same time as the next warning pulse, and it threw me off.
For reference, my best score is 3860, though that’s well before the point where surviving becomes nearly impossible due to meteors outpacing how often you can throw grenades (which I suspect would happen around 7000 or so, but I haven’t actually gotten that far myself).
Oh, wow. xD At first I was under the impression that the hand grenades were used to make one’s way out of craters, and only after doing that for three or so rounds did I attempt to blow up the meteors themselves. Realizing that it actually _worked_ felt like a godly power had been bestowed upon me. So fun! >w<
This game is decidedly pretty excellent.
Once you figure out how it works, it gets incredibly enjoyable.

It gets pretty intense. It resembles missile command more and more the longer the game goes on.
