This was a tough one. I had a lot of scattered design ideas (at one point it was a combination Tetris-ripoff/shmup), but it was hard to coalesce them into a single game. I finally got a game together that is both passably novel and playably coherent. And it does not involve ants.
This game’s title was provided by Mark Rush.
Game 40: Violent Antipathy,
Great job, Nathan! You always hype your games up to be the work thing ever created when usually, they’re incredible. I had a lot of fun this one and actually laughed in delight at the zaniness of the shape I was making.
I didn’t want to comment until I figured out the explosion mechanic. I thought for sure white circles exploded on contact but lo and behold it didn’t always work. Then I realized it was a chemical reaction between white and black circles. Nice.
A lot of fun I had with Violent Antipathy was trying to create ridiculous shapes and then watching them crumble. Like, extremely horizontal shapes that would snap off in a single explosion. Very cool.
I thought a nice little touch was how you can explode yourself if you’re not careful. Was that intentional?
Peace, Nathan,
-John
Yes and no. In one of the earlier design iterations, self-explosion was intended to be a hazard, but I hadn’t specifically considered it for this particular game. Then when testing, I discovered that I had not in fact excluded the blue circle from the explosion-testing. My reaction was something like “Heh, whoops. Well, I guess that works too.”
Nice one, Nathan. I think I’ll play some more now.
Nice one! Probably the best after Wavespark
This was fun, I’m still trying to figure out a good strategy beyond just reacting. I like trying to catch the bits that fell off after a small explosion. My best so far is 455, at that point they are falling to fast for me to think. I think the ramping of difficulty should be a little slower. let me a have a little more time to play with the colors before it gets tough. It’s apparent the blue ball exploding wasn’t planned for, because when it dies, you don’t lose. The game waits till another block hits the ground that you can’t catch before ending.
I’ve been using the grey balls as a buffer to protect the blue ball from the reactions of the black and white balls. Unfortunately, sometimes the game starts with only black or white balls at first, making that tactic impossible. But when it does start with the grey balls, I’ve been able to get up into the 660s thus far using that strategy, though. Pretty fun.
Hi, looks like after an explosion, I drop some circles and I can’t catch them again.>?
Did I die?
